The gaffer and lighting team translate the Director of Photography's vision into practical lighting setups on set. In the Czech Republic, gaffers work at Barrandov Studios — Prague's legendary film facility — as well as Prague Studios and Stillking Films' stages, designing and executing lighting plans for both Czech and major international co-productions.

We assemble experienced gaffer and lighting teams matched to your production's scale, style, and technical requirements. With equipment sourced through rental houses like Filmservice CZ and Prague-based suppliers, our team coordinates crew availability, equipment sourcing, and department logistics so your lighting team arrives fully prepared.

On Location

Czech gaffers and lighting teams are a core part of the service-production infrastructure that earned the country its 'Hollywood of the East' reputation, working at Barrandov Studios and on location across Prague.

Here is how this works in practice. We supply gaffers and full lighting crews for productions shooting throughout the Czech Republic, from sound stages at Barrandov Studios in Prague to period interiors in castles and exteriors across the Bohemian and Moravian countryside. Our gaffers are skilled heads of department who design and execute lighting plans alongside visiting DPs, manage best boys and electricians, and take responsibility for power distribution and on-set electrical safety. The Czech crew base is deep and worldwide skilled, trained in part at FAMU, and comfortable on large global units as well as commercials and documentary work.

Here is the short of it. We set up the lighting package with Prague's well-stocked rental houses — HMI, tungsten and current LED fixtures, generators, distribution and rigging hardware — so the gaffer arrives to a unit equipped to the production's specs. We brief on the look a script needs and plan rigging schedules so the lighting team works efficiently against the shooting plan.

Here is the breakdown. Lighting work in the Czech Republic frequently serves productions exploiting Prague's intact baroque, gothic and art-nouveau architecture. This has stood in for Vienna, Paris and London on films from 'Amadeus' to 'Casino Royale'. Period interiors and protected heritage buildings demand careful, low-impact rigging, and our gaffers are skilled in lighting historic spaces without damage, setting up access through the Prague Film Commission and regional authorities.

Here is what that looks like on the ground. Productions drawn here by the Czech Film Fund's 20% cash rebate, administered by the Státní fond kinematografie, gain crews accustomed to the Central-European land-based climate, where short winter days and long summer light shape the lighting plan for exteriors. We handle the practical framework — power supply, generator placement, cable runs and electrical risk assessments — and budget the lighting department in Czech koruna with 21% VAT.

FAQ

Our Lighting Network

What does a gaffer do on set?

The gaffer is the head of the electrical/lighting department, responsible for executing the DP's lighting vision. They design lighting setups, manage the electric crew, coordinate equipment, and ensure safe power distribution throughout the production.

What crew positions are in a lighting department?

A full lighting department includes: Gaffer (department head), Best Boy Electric (gaffer's assistant, manages crew and equipment), Electricians/Sparks (set up and operate lights), and on larger productions, Rigging Gaffers and Generator Operators.

Do your lighting crews bring their own equipment?

Crew and equipment are typically separate. We can coordinate equipment packages from Czech rental houses to complement your crew booking. Some gaffers have personal equipment for smaller productions.

How many electricians do I need for my production?

Crew size depends on production scale: small shoots may need just a gaffer, medium productions typically need gaffer plus best boy and 1-2 electricians, while larger productions require full departments with rigging crews.

Can your lighting crews work with international DPs?

Yes. Our gaffers are experienced working with international cinematographers and understand international terminology, techniques, and workflow expectations. Many are bilingual Czech-English.

Do you provide generators and power distribution?

We coordinate generator hire and distribution equipment through our rental partners. Generator operators can be included in crew packages for productions requiring significant power infrastructure.

Productions in Czech Republic that need this often pair it with LED Lighting Systems, Portable Power Solutions, and Grip Services for full coverage. Most projects also draw on Gimbal Filming and Virtual Production.
